It’s just gotta be about race. There’s no other rational explanation. (Not that racism is rational). I just don’t believe it’s possible that middle class and poorer Americans actually don’t want to pay less for health care. I just don’t believe it’s possible that middle class and poorer Americans actually prefer a system that would deny them coverage they have been paying for because it was seen as unprofitable. I just don’t believe it’s possible that middle class and poorer Americans actually would be fighting to keep big business in control of their very survival.
It’s all code words. “Obama wants to turn the U.S. into a communist/socialist country.” “Obama wants to take control of our health care… take control of our lives… take our money… increase our taxes… take away our freedoms… surrender to the Taliban… make our country moslem.” It’s all BULL.
Why would Americans be so anxious and willing to screw themselves? All of this ranting is just ignorant and absurd. It doesn’t make any sense.
That is, it doesn’t make sense until you realize what they are really saying is… “I don’t want no damn nigger running my country“. That is why they oppose absolutely anything our elected president appears to be in favor of… no matter how obviously beneficial it would be to them personally. That is why they are willing to rally against their own well being. That is why they are so completely ready to believe absurd lies, over verifiable facts. That is why you can show them a birth certificate, and they can look right at it, and with a straight face say “That is not a ‘birth certificate’… that’s just a ‘certification of live birth’!”
It is simply racism and hate. There is nothing more to this.

Hmmm…Dunno, PJ. I understand your feeling of puzzlement about why Americans resist health care reform. However, I think a perceived loss of income is stubbornly hanging on in the minds of a lot of people. Greed makes people stupid. “I’m already worried about losing my job and making ends meet, so I don’t want the government to take what little money I still have.” Illogical, – but aren’t we often that way about our core drive to control our lives?
Who’s “PJ”?
I whole heartedly agree, P-Dub. I love that elder statesman Jimmy cCarter came right out and said as much… of course they lambasted him for it. If I were Obama, I’d be saying ‘how dare you’ about pictures depicting him as Hitler, for gosh sakes… but guess that’s why he is president and I am not.
As for the ‘MY country’ statements that the religious folks are making… that one gets me going! I am not antireligious now, but folks that run around claiming extra rights because they say that this country was founded as a ‘christian nation’… I beg your pardon, go back and read your history. Just because the founding fathers read the bible did not make them christian. They were Deists. They believe God should be studied, but that he keeps him noise out of politics. They instituted the separation of church and state idea to protect government FROM religion… not the other way around. The most educated and revered (feared) men of that day in any community was the local pastor. Who often threatened, either veiled or overt, religious sanctions if the local governmental leaders did not act in accordance with what they deemed appropriate. And you know, that just ain’t right… not then and not now.
I think Harry Shearer who voices the pious neighbor on the Simpsons, Ned Flanders, said it best. When he was asked in an interview once what Ned would think about religious influence in the presidential election, he said (in character), “Well, by golly, I reckon we should all go down to church and pray that God helps folks make a good choice and leave it at that.”
Religious defense of racism and hatred against others of differing ideologies… Who we talking about here? Isn’t that what these very same people claim about Muslims and them dang “A-rabs”.
Thank God for sane voices like you, P-Dub.
